Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf soft white bread (preferably sandwich bread, crusts removed)
  • 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 4 oz shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced finely
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, thyme blend)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • For the Marinara Dip:
  • 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves, torn (optional)

Instructions

  1. Trim the crusts off each bread slice and flatten each slice to about 1/4 inch thick using a rolling pin.
  2. In a small bowl, combine melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried Italian herbs, salt, and pepper to make garlic butter.
  3. Mix shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese in another bowl.
  4. Brush a generous layer of garlic butter on one side of each flattened bread slice.
  5. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of the cheese mixture evenly across the bread.
  6. Roll the bread slice tightly around the cheese to form a cylinder and pinch edges to seal. Use a little water if needed to help stick.
  7. Place rolled bombs seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet and brush tops with beaten egg.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake bombs for 15–18 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  9. While bombs bake, heat olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat, sauté minced garlic for 30 seconds.
  10. Add crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper; simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  11. Stir in fresh basil just before serving.
  12. Let bombs rest 2-3 minutes after baking and serve warm with marinara dip.

Notes

Flatten bread slices to prevent tearing and ensure smooth rolling. Seal edges well to avoid cheese leakage. Brush egg wash for a golden crust. Watch baking time closely to avoid drying out or underbaking. Marinara dip can be made ahead or substituted with store-bought. Reheat bombs in oven to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
