  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for frying)
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for dusting)
  • Maple syrup or fruit preserves for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the egg batter by whisking together eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, nutmeg (if using), salt, and pepper until smooth.
  2. Assemble sandwiches by layering 1.5 ounces of ham and 1.5 ounces of Swiss cheese between 4 slices of bread, topping with remaining bread slices.
  3. Heat skillet over medium-low heat and melt 1 tablespoon butter.
  4. Dip each sandwich into the egg batter, soaking about 20 seconds per side without over-soaking.
  5. Place sandwiches in skillet and cook 4-5 minutes per side, adding remaining butter before flipping, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  6. Remove sandwiches and let rest for 1-2 minutes.
