A comforting and crispy casserole featuring ground beef, cheddar cheese, and frozen tater tots, perfect for quick and easy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
  • 32 oz frozen tater tots
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt to taste (about 1 tsp)
  • Black pepper to taste (about 1/2 tsp)
  • Optional: chopped green onions or fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until no pink remains. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  5. Pour the soup mixture into the skillet with the beef and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 2 minutes over low heat to meld flavors.
  6. Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Spread the beef and sauce mixture evenly on the bottom.
  7. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the beef layer.
  8. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on top of the cheese.
  9. Scatter the remaining 1 cup of cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
  10. Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes until the tots are crispy and golden, and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  11. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley if desired.

Notes

For extra crispy tots, broil the casserole for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking, watching carefully to avoid burning. Drain fat from beef to avoid greasiness. Spread tater tots in a single layer to prevent sogginess. You can swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. Use gluten-free cream soup or homemade sauce for gluten-free adaptation.
