A festive and eye-catching dessert featuring moist red velvet brownies with a creamy, tangy cream cheese swirl that creates a beautiful flag-like pattern. Perfect for celebrations and quick to make in under an hour.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 15.25 oz red velvet cake mix (recommend Betty Crocker)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil (80 ml)
  • 1/4 cup water (60 ml)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (225 g)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50 g)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the red velvet cake mix, cocoa powder, 2 eggs, vegetable oil, and water until smooth and well combined (about 2-3 minutes). Batter should be thick but pourable.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with sugar, 1 egg, and vanilla extract until creamy and smooth, about 2 minutes.
  4. Pour half of the red velvet batter into the prepared pan, smoothing it evenly with a spatula.
  5. Dollop half of the cream cheese mixture on top in spoonfuls.
  6. Add the remaining red velvet batter over the cream cheese dollops, followed by the rest of the cream cheese mixture.
  7. Using a toothpick or skewer, gently drag through the batter in vertical and horizontal lines to form a flag pattern. Avoid over-swelling to keep distinct swirls.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Start checking at 30 minutes by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares and serving.

Notes

Use softened cream cheese for a smooth swirl. Do not over-swirl to maintain the flag pattern. Use room-temperature eggs for better texture. Start checking for doneness at 30 minutes to avoid overbaking. Cool completely before slicing for best results. For gluten-free, substitute cake mix with almond flour and extra cocoa powder. For dairy-free, use plant-based cream cheese and vegan red velvet mix.
