Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or almond flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 23 tablespoons milk (or dairy-free milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: In a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir frequently and cook until apples soften but still hold their shape, about 8-10 minutes. Add a splash of water if mixture is too dry. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In a bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Toss in cold, cubed butter. Use a pastry cutter or fingers to work butter into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Optionally, spread crumble on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes until golden and crisp, stirring halfway.
  3. Whisk the Cinnamon Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons milk. Add more milk as needed until glaze is smooth and drizzlable but not too thin.
  4. Assemble the Jars: Spoon a couple tablespoons of apple filling into the bottom of each jar. Add a generous layer of crumble on top. Drizzle with cinnamon glaze. Repeat layers if jar is tall, finishing with extra glaze on top.
  5. Serve or Chill: Serve immediately warm or chill in the fridge for an hour to let flavors meld. For chilled jars, bring to room temperature or microwave for 15-20 seconds before serving.

Notes

Keep butter cold when making crumble for best texture. Baking crumble separately creates a crispier topping. Use Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples for best texture. Add a splash of apple cider or water if apples start sticking. Toast cinnamon lightly for deeper flavor. Store crumble separately to keep it crisp longer. Glaze is essential for tying flavors together.
