A quick and easy Korean beef bowl with rice that balances savory, sweet, and slightly spicy flavors, perfect for busy weeknights and adaptable to various dietary needs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 3 green onions, sliced thin
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 4 cups (900 g) cooked white rice
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cook the rice: Measure and rinse 2 cups (450 g) of white rice until water runs clear. Cook according to package instructions or in a rice cooker (about 15 minutes). Fluff and keep warm.
  2. Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup (60 ml) soy sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 3 cloves minced garlic, 1 teaspoon grated ginger, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes if using. Set aside.
  3. Brown the beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 pound (450 g) ground beef and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula until no pink remains and it starts to brown nicely. Drain excess fat if necessary, leaving a little for juiciness.
  4. Add the sauce to the beef: Pour the sauce mixture over the cooked beef. Stir well and simmer for 3-5 minutes, letting the sauce thicken slightly and coat the meat evenly.
  5. Garnish and assemble: Remove from heat. Spoon cooked rice into bowls, top with the savory Korean beef, then sprinkle with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds.
  6. Optional extras: Add a fried egg on top or some quick-pickled vegetables for extra flavor and richness.

Notes

For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos. Fresh garlic and ginger provide best flavor. Avoid overcooking beef to keep it tender and juicy. Adjust sauce seasoning to taste. Optional toppings like fried egg or pickled veggies add richness and complexity.
