Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons ceremonial or culinary grade matcha powder
  • 2 ounces (60 ml) hot water (around 175°F or 80°C)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk of choice (whole, almond, oat, or coconut milk)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sweetener (honey, agave syrup, or simple syrup), optional
  • Ice cubes to fill the glass
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Whipped coconut cream or cinnamon for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat about 2 ounces (60 ml) of water to around 175°F (80°C). Let boiling water cool for a minute if no thermometer is available.
  2. Place 1 to 2 teaspoons of matcha powder into a bowl. Pour the hot water over it.
  3. Whisk briskly in a zigzag motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and a light froth forms, about 30 seconds. Continue whisking if lumps remain.
  4. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of sweetener to the matcha mixture and stir until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  5. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes (about 1 cup or 240 ml). Pour cold milk over the ice.
  6. Slowly pour the matcha mixture over the milk and ice to create a swirl effect.
  7. Gently stir with a straw or spoon to blend before serving.

Notes

Use water at about 175°F to avoid bitterness. Whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion to prevent clumps. Use large ice cubes to reduce dilution. Adjust sweetness and milk type to preference. Matcha concentrate can be prepared ahead and stored up to 24 hours in the fridge.
