Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (150g) fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 4 large lemons (plus 1 for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar (or honey, agave, or sugar-free alternative to taste)
  • 1 cup (240ml) water (for syrup)
  • 2 cups (480ml) cold water
  • 2 cups (480ml) sparkling water (unflavored or lemon/berry-flavored)
  • Ice cubes (for serving)
  • Mint leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Extra blueberries (optional, for garnish)
  • Lemon slices (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup blueberries, 1/2 cup sugar, zest from 1 lemon, and 1 cup water.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until berries burst and mixture turns deep purple (about 5 minutes).
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for another 3–5 minutes until blueberries are very soft and syrup thickens slightly.
  4. Pour the hot blueberry mixture through a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl or jug. Press solids to extract all juice. Discard or reserve solids.
  5. Let the syrup cool to room temperature (refrigerate or use an ice bath for faster cooling).
  6. Juice 4 large lemons (about 1 cup juice), straining out seeds and pulp if desired.
  7. In a large pitcher, combine cooled blueberry syrup, 1 cup lemon juice, and 2 cups cold water. Stir well and adjust to taste.
  8. Just before serving, slowly pour in 2 cups sparkling water and stir gently.
  9. Fill glasses with ice, pour over the sparkling blueberry lemonade, and garnish with lemon slices, blueberries, and mint if desired.

Notes

For best fizz, add sparkling water just before serving. Adjust sweetness and tartness to taste. The blueberry syrup can be made ahead and stored for up to 4 days. For a sugar-free version, use monk fruit, stevia, or erythritol. Serve over ice, not with ice in the pitcher, to avoid dilution. Garnish with mint, lemon slices, or extra blueberries for a festive touch.
