These Sweet Potato Hushpuppies are a delightful combination of crispy crunch and comforting sweetness, perfect as a snack, side dish, or party appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mashed sweet potatoes, slightly cooled
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup fine ground cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (regular or plant-based)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Neutral oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

  1. Peel, dice, and boil the sweet potatoes until fork-tender, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and mash them until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Whisk until evenly blended.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the mashed sweet potatoes, egg, and milk until smooth and well combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the hushpuppies light and fluffy.
  5. In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to ensure the temperature stays consistent.
  6. Using a spoon or small cookie scoop, carefully drop small balls of batter into the hot oil. Be cautious not to overcrowd the fryer or skillet.
  7. Fry the hushpuppies for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they’re golden brown and crispy. Remove them with a slotted spoon or spider strainer and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Plate your delicious sweet potato hushpuppies with your favorite dipping sauce—honey mustard, ranch, or even a spicy aioli.

Notes

[‘Choose fresh sweet potatoes for the best flavor.’, ‘If the batter feels too thick, add a splash of milk to loosen it. If it’s too thin, sprinkle in a touch more flour or cornmeal.’, ‘Keep an eye on the oil temperature to avoid burning or undercooking the hushpuppies.’, ‘Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature and ensure crispiness.’, ‘Experiment with spices like cayenne or smoked paprika for added flavor.’]
